The Ardagh Chalice, housed at the National Museum of Ireland is the finest example of 8th century metalwork ever to come to light. Typically, it was found in 1868 in a field at Ardagh, Co Limerick by two men digging for potatoes. It is 6" high and made of silver, gold and bronze. There is a gold filigree band surrounding the chalice with shield decorations, below of which are the names of the Apostles.
